Panthers Split with Pride to Open Weekend

HAMMOND, Ind. - The Davenport University softball team split with Purdue Northwest on Saturday afternoon on the road at Dowling Park. The Panthers (17-19, 8-8 GLIAC) have now surpassed both their overall win total from a season ago (15) and their conference win total (seven) with six doubleheaders still remaining in the 2025 season.

Game One
Result: L, 2-1
How it Happened
Trailing 2-0, the Panthers were able to put their first run of the game on the board in the fourth inning.  After Grace Gilbert and Darby Kramp were walked, Kailyne Luna recorded a double to left field, which allowed Gilbert to score. However, the Panthers were unable to bring home any more runs, leaving two runners on base.

The two sides remained deadlocked for the remainder of the game. DU notched one hit in the sixth and seventh innings, but could not bring any runners home.

In the circle, Hailey Whisman pitched the entire game for the Panthers, registering three strikeouts in the loss.

Grace Gilbert led the way offensively for DU, finishing the game with two hits and a run scored. Luna, Ally Prasnjak and Madison Cole all also chipped in with one hit apiece in the loss for Davenport.

Game Two
Result: W, 7-5
How it Happened
The bats got hot in the second inning of game two for DU, recording seven runs and five hits. Gilbert had the opening hit of the inning with a single up the middle. With the bases loaded, Luna singled through the right side, allowing Gilbert to reach home plate.

On the ensuing at-bat, Brooke Bernt doubled through the left side, bringing in two more runs (Cole and Alex Rendon). Luna then scored on the following at-bat off an error, pushing the DU advantage to 4-0. Bernt, Savanna Disbrow and Prasnjak capped off the massive scoring run, all reaching home off an error by the first baseman.

The Pride (9-26-1, 4-12 GLIAC) trimmed their deficit to two (7-5) in the sixth, but could not complete the comeback effort.

Mariah Stines picked up her first win of the season in the circle for DU, pitching five innings and registering two strikeouts.

Offensively, Bernt led the way for the Panthers with a pair of hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Gilbert added two hits and a run scored for DU. Luna, Prasnjak and Cole all finished with a hit and a run scored.
