Panthers Open Weekend with Two Losses to SVSU

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport University softball team was swept by Saginaw Valley State on Friday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. It was a long night at the ballpark for both squads, with the first pitch of game one being thrown at 4 p.m. and the final out of game two taking place at 10 p.m. due to a a two-hour weather delay between games. 

Game One
Result: L, 6-3
How it Happened
Trailing 1-0 in the third inning, the Panthers (17-25, 8-14 GLIAC) had their best output of the game, notching three hits and three runs. Madison Cole got the inning started with a single to the shortstop. Brooke Bernt reached first on the ensuing at-bat off a bunt.

Kailyne Luna then sent the ball over the fence in center field for a three-run home run, giving the Panthers a 3-1 lead. The home run marked the first of the season for the third baseman.

However, the Cardinals (35-9, 20-2 GLIAC) scored five unanswered runs in the ensuing four innings to close the game.

Hannah Tahaney was the primary pitcher in the circle for the Panthers, pitching 4.1 innings and tossing two strikeouts. 

Offensively, Bernt, Luna, Ally Prasnjak and Cole all finished with a hit in the loss for Davenport.

Game Two
Result: L, 13-0 (6 Inn.)
How it Happened
SVSU did most of its damage in the sixth inning, recording eight runs and six hits to take the 13-0 lead. 

Macy Ireland pitched a no-hitter in the win for the Cards, as she continues to be one of the top pitchers in the conference. Earning six of the nine GLIAC Pitcher of the Week awards this season.

Three different pitchers split time in the circle for DU; Hailey Whisman, Mariah Stines and Julia Perry.

Up Next
The Panthers will return home tomorrow, hosting Wayne State at noon at the DU Turf Field. The game will serve as senior day for DU, honoring Savanna Disbrow and Brooke Bernt after the doubleheader concludes.
