Panthers Split with Lakers to Close Homestand

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport University softball team split with Roosevelt on Sunday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex to end a 10-game home stretch. Over that period, the Panthers (16-18, 7-7 GLIAC) went 5-5, as all ten games were against conference opponents.

Game One
Result: W, 9-3
How it Happened
With the game tied 3-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, the DU offense posted three runs on the board to take a 6-3 advantage. A hit up the middle by Madison Cole brought home the first run of the inning (Grace Gilbert), while Hannah Maurer advanced to second on the play.

Two at-bats later, Maurer and Cole reached home off a single to right field by Kailyne Luna

The Panthers' offense struck again in the sixth with three more runs. Savanna Disbrow doubled to left field, which allowed Brooke Bernt to round second and third, reaching home to push the lead to four (7-4). Later in the inning, an Alania Schwanke single scored two more runs (Disbrow and Ally Prasnjak) and moved the DU lead to 9-3.

In the final inning, the Davenport defense held strong, holding the Rangers (10-22, 4-10 GLIAC) scoreless and without a hit to close out the game.

In the circle, Whisman picked up her ninth win this season, pitching all seven innings and recording four strikeouts.

Offensively, Bernt led the way with three hits, which tied a season-high for the senior, while also scoring one run. Disbrow added two hits, two runs, one RBI and a double, while Luna finished with two hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Gilbert chipped in with two hits and one run scored.

Game Two
Result: L, 8-3
How it Happened
Roosevelt got out to a fast start offensively, starting the game with five runs and four hits in the opening inning. The Lakers extended their lead to six after adding one more run in the second inning.

Disbrow launched the ball over the center field fence in the bottom of the fourth, which brought Bernt home as well and trimmed the DU deficit to four (6-2).  However, the Lakers answered with a pair of runs in the ensuing inning and the six-run lead was too much for the Panthers to overcome.

Hannah Tahaney and Mariah Stines split time in the circle for DU. Stines finished with three strikeouts and only allowed one earned run in 6.1 innings pitched.

Bernt had another strong showing offensively, ending with two hits, a double, one run scored and an RBI. The center fielder has now recorded a run in five straight contests for the Panthers. Cole finished with two hits and a run scored, while Disbrow, Schwanke and Alex Rendon also added a hit in the loss.

Up Next
The Panthers will continue conference play, heading to Big Rapids, Mich. to take on Ferris State on Wednesday (April 9) at 2 p.m.
