Panthers get first GLIAC win, 22-6, over Saginaw Valley State

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport women's lacrosse team got back into the win column and won their first GLIAC game of the season with a 22-6 victory over visiting Saginaw Valley State on Sunday. The Cardinals, in their first year as a program, fall to 0-9 overall and 0-4 in the conference. Davenport gets back over the .500 mark at 6-5 and are 1-3 in the league.

Davenport started off on a 3-0 run to grab a lead they would keep throughout. Ele Darmofal scored the first two goals for the Panthers with Brianna Rodriguez getting an assist on the second goal at 9:59 of the first quarter. Mika Kulynych made it 3-0 at the 9:18 mark from Gabby Basha for her 10th goal of the season.

The Cardinals broke into the scoring column at 7:48 as Annelle Dykema scored her fifth goal of the season unassisted. Blakely Malpass would notch the next two goals for the Panthers followed by woman-up goals from Basha and Maddy Haynes. Darmofal ended the first quarter scoring at 45 seconds left for a 7-2 lead.

The Panthers led 13-3 at halftime and then the running clock started. Davenport would come out in the third quarter and score five straight goals to increase their lead to 18-3. Gabby Parker would reply with three straight goals by the Cardinals stretching into the fourth quarter. DU would then finish the game with four straight goals including a pair by Addison Roe to finish up 22-6.

Davenport had 33 shots including 23 on goal. SVSU managed 11 shots with eight shots on goal. The Panthers had a huge 24-8 edge in draw controls. Rodriguez led the team with six draw controls. Malpass led the offense with five goals. Darmofal finished with four goals and one assist. Haynes contributed three goals and caused one turnover. Addison Hardin, Addison Roe, Alyssa Bird and Kulynych had two goals. Zoe Cassell got the start in goal and played the first three quarters with three saves. Rachel Livak played the final quarter in goal and made one save.

The Panthers have played one round in the GLIAC and will face Concordia-St. Paul for the second time this season on Friday, Apr. 11 at 5 PM.
