On August 31st, the Davenport Panthers opened their season against New Haven in Indiana, Pennsylvania, after two intense weeks of preseason. Just minutes after kickoff,
Leilani Lepe broke through the Chargers' defensive line to score the first official try of the season. Lepe also handled kickoffs and conversions, racking up an incredible 33 points on the day.
The Panthers came out strong and relentless, repeatedly breaking through the Chargers' defense. Junior
Jean-Marie Gaines and freshman
Addison Foote each powered across the try line after running sharp attacking lines. Davenport started seven freshmen, who rose to the challenge with composure and teamwork that made them look like seasoned veterans. The forwards dominated set pieces, stealing multiple lineouts and scrums, and with the support from lock
Rachel Wilkie, they poached key possessions to set up even more scoring opportunities.
By halftime, the Panthers held a commanding 59–0 lead. With substitutions in the second half, Davenport experimented with new plays and strategies to build depth for the season ahead. Following an injury substitution, freshman
Olivia Graham stepped up, taking on both fullback and eight man duties. Despite the new roles, she impressed with powerful tackles and strong attacking lines.
Cece Stowers added to the highlight reel, crashing through four defenders to score the first try of the second half.
The Panthers closed out the match with a dominant 78–19 victory. This game was especially significant as it marked the first opportunity for returning players and newcomers to take the field together.
The Panthers now turn their focus to their first home game of the season next week against Wheeling. Stay tuned, this is just the beginning of an exciting year for Davenport Women's Rugby.
