● The Davenport Panther football team will be looking to get back into the win column after a tough 28-27 overtime loss at Truman State last Saturday. The Panthers led 14-0 after the first quarter and 21-7 midway through the third quarter before the Bulldogs scored the next 21 points. DU was driving early in the second quarter up 14 points and had a 3rd-and-3 at the TSU 31-yard line, when
D'Wan Mathis was intercepted and Dominic Grand returned it 73 yards to cut the deficit in half. That did not deter the Panthers as they scored on their first drive of the second half. 11 plays and 60 yards in 5:47 was the drive stats and
Cephus Harris had a one-yard touchdown run. Truman State found their rhythm in the second half offensively after just 87 yards in the first 30 minutes. Nathan Ryan caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Hair on 4th-and-8, which was a tough pill to swallow. On the next drive, TSU drove 62 yards in five plays as Hair rushed 30 yards to tie the game with 13:20 to play in regulation. DU took over the ball with 4:31 and drove into field goal range.
Caiden Thomas was attempting his first field goal as a Panther and missed from 31 yards on the left hash to send the game into overtime. Both teams scored a touchdown, but DU went for the two-point conversion and the win. Mathis went back to pass, but could not find anyone open and threw short of Geroge Sims in the back of the end zone.
● Harris had his second straight 100-yard rushing game with 22 carries for 112 yards and three touchdowns. He became the first Panther to rush for three touchdowns in a game. He currently has five rushing scores this season, which is tied for the GLIAC lead with Wyatt Bower of Ferris State and is second in Division II. The offense showed great strides in week two accounting for 459 total yards (220 rushing, 239 passing). It was the most gained in a game since Oct. 19, 2024 against Wayne State (470 yards).
Latrell Scott led the team with 11 tackles, including seven solo stops and had 1.5 tackles for a loss of two yards. He has back-to-back, 10-tackle games after 10 at Gannon in week one. The offensive line was superb paving the way for 220 rushing yards and did not give up a sack in 36 pass attempts by Mathis.
● Northern Michigan has shown signs of improvement in Shane Richardson's third season at the helm of the Wildcats. They have played some tight ball games in 2025 with a seven-point loss (44-37) in the opener against Minnesota State Moorhead. They led 21-0 early in the second quarter and 27-15 at halftime. MSM scored the next 22 points to take a 37-27 lead and never gave it up. They fell 23-18 at Northwood in week two and drove 97 yards in 11 plays to score with seven seconds left. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by the Timberwolves. Northwood then went on last week to defeat Saginaw Valley State 38-14 in the Axe Bowl. Last week, the Wildcats welcomed FCS member St. Thomas to the Superior Dome. NMU led 7-6 into the fourth quarter, before a pair of Andy Peters touchdown passes gave the Tommies the road win. The Wildcats are inching closer to getting Richardson his first win at NMU (0-25).
● The Panthers lead 7-2 in the all-time series against Northern Michigan. It is their highest win percentage against any opponent and DU has captured the last five meetings over the Wildcats. This will be the first of two meetings against NMU. This Saturday is the GLIAC contest and they play again on Nov. 8 in Caledonia in a non-league affair. The two teams also played twice in a season in 2021 and 2022. Last year, it was Davenport scoring the most points in a series game with a 52-31 triumph at home on Nov. 9.
Mac VandenHout got his first start as a Panther at quarterback and earned GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors after accounting for four touchdowns. He rushed for 113 yards and two scores and also threw for 156 yards and two more scores.
Hakeem Harris caught a 77-yard touchdown pass to end the third quarter and
Peyton Carder hauled in a 38-yard score with 2:27 left to seal the win. DU gained 434 total yards (8.9 per play) and did not turn it over.
