Panthers Sweep Cats in GLIAC Opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -  The Davenport University women's volleyball team swept Northern Michigan at the DU Student Center on Friday evening, winning 25-22, 25-13, 25-23, with nine service aces contributing to the victory. 

The opening set began with a sharp start for the Panthers (4-4, 1-0 GLIAC), as Abby Alan secured the opening point with a kill assisted by Hayley Carr. The Panthers maintained a steady lead, highlighted by a crucial four-point streak from 16-16, during which Karley Pretzer delivered two key kills, and Madison Berry added multiple assists. Despite a late Wildcats push that closed the gap to 23-22, Davenport sealed the set with back-to-back kills from Alan and Kaitlin Jordan, clinching the set 25-22.

In the second set,. Alan was instrumental in Davenport's offense, contributing multiple kills, including a pivotal one at 8-7 that helped shift momentum. Carr's exceptional serving performance became the highlight of the set, as her series of service aces fueled a decisive 9-0 run, pushing the Panthers from a 12-11 edge to a commanding 20-11 lead. Ultimately, Davenport's balanced attack and strong serving secured a 25-13 victory for the set, with Jordan sealing it with a kill from Berry.

DU put together a masterclass comeback in the final set, rallying back from a 12-2 deficit. Sydney Swan and Morgan Tydings played pivotal roles in the run, as Swan recorded multiple kills, including one at 21-20, while Tydings delivered critical points both offensively and defensively. Berry's setting facilitated the offensive resurgence that allowed Davenport to close the gap and eventually secure a 25-23 victory with a decisive kill from Tydings to end the set.

Alan led the Panthers with 14 kills and one ace, finishing with 15 points. Tydings recorded seven kills and three block assists, accumulating 8.5 points. Madison Berry orchestrated the offense with a match-high 36 assists. Hayley Carr delivered a career-high six aces and 16 digs in the victory.
