Panthers Sweep Opening Weekend with Win Over Huskies

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Madison Berry recorded her third double-double of the season to help lead the Davenport University women's volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Michigan Tech on Saturday afternoon at the DU Student Center. The freshman finished with 42 assists and 13 digs for the Panthers (5-4, 2-0 GLIAC). 

Early kills from Kaitlyn Marsh and Karley Pretzer in the opening set gave DU a 3-0 lead. Berry facilitated the attack with multiple assists, including a key setup for Sydney Swan at 9-6, maintaining a slim advantage. As the set progressed, Davenport's defense shone with blocks by Morgan Tydings and Marsh, helping to regain momentum and push the score to 22-19. In a tense finish, the Panthers held off the Huskies (3-6, 0-2 GLIAC) late challenge, with Abby Alan and Kaitlin Jordan securing crucial points, ultimately clinching the set 35-33 with a decisive block by Pretzer and Marsh.

The second set began with the Huskies gaining an early lead, but Davenport quickly responded with a service ace from Julia Frederick, narrowing the gap. Alan and Berry combined effectively, with Alan delivering key kills supported by Berry's assists to level the score at 8-8. Davenport then capitalized on an offensive push, highlighted by Tydings' consecutive kills, and closed the set decisively with a series of service aces from Carr, sealing a 25-16 victory and tKing a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the final set, Davenport found momentum with Alan's service ace, initiating a 4-0  run for DU, giving them a 5-3 advantage. Carr's crucial serve sparked a decisive 5-0 run, with Alan and Jordan each securing pivotal points, pushing the advantage to six (22-16). Davenport closed the set with a 25-17 victory, highlighted by a final assist from Berry to Alan, sealing the win.

Hayley Carr anchored the defense, recording 25 digs while also adding four assists. The sophomore has eclipsed double-digit digs in all nine matches. Jordan was effective at the net, finishing with 10 kills on a .474 hitting percentage and three total blocks. Alan chipped in with 10 kills and served two aces, totaling 13 total points.
