MARQUETTE, Mich. - A pair of overtime games provided high drama at Northern Michigan on Jan. 24 and 25 for the Davenport ACHA women's hockey team. The Panthers have won six of their last seven games and earned a split on the road against the Wildcats. On Saturday, the Wildcats came out on top with a 3-2 win. On Sunday, the score was flipped as DU got the extra session winner in a 3-2 decision.
The Panthers seemed on their way to a sweep of the Wildcats if not for a Saturday comeback. DU led 2-0 through two periods on goals by
Kacie Stolarek and
Abi Courtney in the second period.
Gabby Basha assisted on the first goal and Stolarek on the second goal. NMU tied it up on goals by Anna Schultz at 12:43 of the third period and Milena Hovis short-handed at 14:26. It looked like the game would end in a tie after overtime, but Schultz scored her 18th of the season with 18 seconds left.
Reilly Lind stopped 23 shots for the Panthers, while Lauren Eager stopped 20 shots for the Wildcats.
The Panthers staged a comeback of their own on Sunday as NMU led 2-1 late in the third period. Eva Kierzek got the Wildcats on the board at 6:40 of the first period. Davenport would tie the game at 10:39 of the third period as Stolarek scored on the power play for her 22nd goal of the season. The Panthers went on the power play at 16:23 of the period, but NMU got a short-handed goal by Schultz at 17:38 for a 2-1 lead. Hovis would take a tripping penalty in the final two minutes and the Panthers would capitalize as Stolarek got the power play goal from
Abby Hildebrand and Basha with 30 ticks left in regulation. It didn't take long into overtime as Stolarek made it a hat trick 37 seconds in unassisted for the winner. Stolarek is now just one goal away from tying the single-season record held by Lexie Boydston in the 2013-14 season.
Avery Hall stopped 25 shots for Davenport, while Eager made 30 saves for Northern Michigan.
