Rebounding Edge Lifts No. 12 NMU Past Davenport

MARQUETTE, Mich. — Davenport women's basketball kept the opening quarter tight but could not keep pace with No. 12 Northern Michigan in a 73–46 loss Friday afternoon at Vandament Arena.

DU (3-8, 1-2 GLIAC) briefly held an early lead before the Wildcats (12-1, 3-0 GLIAC) used their size and depth to pull away, finishing with a 51-30 advantage on the glass.

The Panthers struck first behind Nevaeh Williams, who scored on a jumper and added a free throw to give Davenport a 5–3 edge. A fast-break layup from Maya Mitchell, assisted by Williams, extended the lead to 7–3 midway through the quarter. Northern Michigan responded down the stretch, edging ahead late to take a 16–14 lead after one.

Davenport continued to trade punches early in the second quarter as Williams found Taaria Pehi-Kupa for a layup to knot the score at 16–16. Northern Michigan then created separation with a 7–0 run, pushing the lead into double figures. Maddie Geers connected on a 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the half, but the Panthers trailed 37–28 at the break.

Northern Michigan opened the third quarter with a strong offensive push, extending its lead behind efficient shooting and second-chance opportunities. Williams scored twice early in the frame to cut the deficit to 39–32, and Geers added a layup later in the quarter, but the Wildcats maintained control and carried a 50–36 advantage into the fourth.

DU struggled to generate sustained offense in the final period as Northern Michigan outscored the Panthers 21–10. Geers and Anna Axtell each scored in the quarter, but the Wildcats' presence in the paint and on the boards sealed the outcome.
