Davenport Falls to Roosevelt as Regular Season Winds Down

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Davenport fell to Roosevelt, 64-52, on Saturday afternoon at the DU Student Center. Despite forcing 14 steals and applying consistent defensive pressure, the Panthers were unable to overcome Roosevelt's timely perimeter shooting.

Roosevelt opened quickly, as Marie Outlay knocked down a three-pointer on the first possession, followed by another from Brynne Katcher to give the Lakers a 6-0 lead in the opening minute. Davenport answered behind Nevaeh Williams, who converted back-to-back layups to help tie the game at 6-6 with 4:21 remaining in the first quarter. In the closing seconds of the period, Anna Axtell drilled a three-pointer to even the score at 9-9.

Early in the second quarter, DU grabbed momentum when Williams connected from beyond the arc at the 7:39 mark off an assist from Ellie Toney. Maya Mitchell added a layup at 4:59 to push the Panthers ahead 18-16. RU responded late in the quarter, however, as Katcher hit another three-pointer with 2:05 remaining to swing the lead back. The Lakers carried a 33-27 advantage into halftime.

The Panthers struggled to find offensive rhythm in the third quarter, converting just one field goal in 15 attempts. DU stayed within striking distance at the free-throw line, knocking down 7-of-8 attempts in the period. Axtell added a layup and a block, while Maddie Geers sank two free throws late. The Lakers extended its lead to 47-36 heading into the final quarter.

Davenport made a final push in the fourth, highlighted by a Toney layup and free throw at the 6:25 mark to trim the deficit to 50-41. Williams continued to disrupt defensively with key steals as the Panthers matched Roosevelt's 16 fourth-quarter points. Despite the effort, the Panthers were unable to close the gap, falling 64-52.
