Davenport Picks Up 10 Point Victory in Home Opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Davenport men's lacrosse team secured a decisive 17-7 win over Wheeling on Saturday (Feb. 28). Davenport's offense was led by a strong third-quarter performance, netting eight goals to pull away. The team dominated the faceoff circle, winning 21 of 27 faceoffs.

Wheeling struck first in the opening quarter at 12:48, followed by a quick response from DU's Luke Eichbauer at 12:09. Eichbauer scored again just moments later with an assist from Sean Kuzma, giving Davenport a 2-1 lead. The Cards answered back with a pair of goals to regain the lead. However, Davenport's Jayden Ashley and Eichbauer found the net again, with Eichbauer securing his hat trick at 2:31. The quarter concluded with the Panthers leading the Cardinals 4-3.

Davenport maintained its lead in the second quarter, with Tommy Becker opening the scoring at 13:30.  Eichbauer pushed DU's lead to 6-4 at 10:07 with another goal. Despite multiple attempts from both sides, including several wide or blocked shots, the quarter ended with the score tied at 2-2 for the quarter, keeping Davenport ahead 6-5 overall.

The Panthers delivered a dominant performance in the third quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 8-1. Charlie Fritz ignited the offense with a goal at 14:12 and went on to assist Will Bjork at 12:31 and Becker at the 13-second mark. Logan Flaherty was pivotal in faceoffs, consistently securing possession and contributing a goal at 8:25. Luke Fritz, Ashley and Eichbauer each added to the tally, with Eichbauer's goal coming off an assist from Flaherty at 4:11. The Cardinals' sole response was a goal by Jack Rowe at 8:31, but Davenport's lead expanded significantly by the quarter's end.

In the final quarter, DU expanded on its strong performance, securing a 17-7 victory over the Cardinals. Eichbauer opened the scoring in the quarter at 11:57 with a goal assisted by Becker, capitalizing on a penalty. Charlie Fritz further added to Davenport's tally with consecutive goals at 4:43 and 2:26, both assisted by Becker. Despite a goal from the Cardinals' Finn Wotton at 6:02, Davenport maintained control, winning multiple faceoffs and executing effective clears to close out the match.
