Toney Tops 1,000 as Panthers Close Regular Season

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport (7-21, 5-15 GLIAC) saw its regular season come to a close Saturday afternoon after celebrating its four seniors — Hannah Schroeder, Madison Fant, Nevaeh Williams and Ellie Toney — with a 71-62 setback to Ferris State (24-5, 17-3 GLIAC). Despite a strong start and leading after the first quarter, a decisive third period by the Bulldogs proved to be the difference. With the loss, the Panthers were unable to clinch the eighth and final spot in the GLIAC Tournament.

The Panthers opened the game with a commanding defensive effort, holding the Bulldogs without a field goal in the first quarter. Williams jumpstarted the offense with a jumper at the 8:09 mark before adding a fastbreak layup to give Davenport early momentum. Toney and Anna Axtell each added key buckets down the stretch, as DU carried a 10-4 lead into the second quarter.

DU continued to battle in the second, finding success in the paint. Kayla Covington converted a layup and free throw at 6:34 to tie the game at 15, and Williams followed with an and-one finish to reclaim the lead. Toney added two more baskets inside, helping Davenport maintain a narrow edge despite Ferris State connecting on three triples late in the quarter. The Panthers entered halftime ahead 26-24.

Davenport briefly extended its advantage early in the third, highlighted by a Williams jumper assisted by Toney and a fastbreak finish that pushed the lead to 37-34. However, Ferris State responded with a 31-16 quarter, using a flurry of three-pointers and transition buckets to flip the momentum. The Bulldogs took a 55-42 lead into the final frame.

The Panthers refused to go quietly in the fourth. Williams sparked a late rally with a jumper and a three-pointer assisted by Axtell, while Toney added a layup and an old-fashioned three-point play to trim the deficit. Davenport's defense forced timely turnovers, including a steal and fastbreak finish by Williams with 1:31 remaining. The Panthers outscored the Bulldogs 20-16 in the quarter but ultimately fell 71-62.

Saturday's contest also marked a milestone moment for Toney. The senior surpassed the 1,000-point mark in the final game of her collegiate career, finishing with 1,003 total career points — a fitting achievement on Senior Day to cap off her impact in a Panther uniform.
