CALEDONIA, Mich. — Davenport University baseball improved to 3-0 in the GLIAC against Roosevelt University on Saturday at the Farmers Insurance Complex, winning both games of a doubleheader with scores of 8–6 and 22-0. Both games lasted seven innings with the second game ending in seven innings due to the league's mercy rule.
GAME 1
Davenport secured an 8–6 victory over Roosevelt, gaining an early advantage with a three-run second inning and maintaining its lead with a two-run fourth. The Panthers opened the scoring in the first inning when
Sam Clay doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on another wild pitch for a 1-0 lead. In the second inning,
Joey Barboza singled, and Clay followed with another single.
Wyatt Epple reached on a fielding error to load the bases, allowing
Justin Johnson to single to center for two RBIs.
Aiden Warn's sacrifice fly added another run, pushing the score to 4-1.
The third inning saw Davenport extend its lead. After Clay walked and advanced to third on a balk and a throwing error, Epple's single brought him home. Johnson's center-field single scored Epple, giving Davenport a 6-1 advantage. Roosevelt responded in the fourth, scoring two runs to narrow the gap to 6-3, but Davenport quickly countered with
Dylan Pawenski doubling and scoring on
Ben Korson's two-run homer, the first of his career, extending the lead to 8-3.
The Lakers attempted a comeback in the sixth with three runs, including a throwing error and a sacrifice fly, making it 8-6. However, Davenport's pitching staff closed the door, allowing no runs in the final inning to secure the victory.
Jeff Agar pitched three innings for Davenport, allowing two hits, one earned run, striking out three batters, and earning his first win of the season.
Gage Vota contributed 2 1/3 innings, surrendering one earned run on three hits and striking out three.
Brandon Skorupski closed the game with a scoreless inning for the save and retired all three batters he faced on nine pitches.
Clay led the offensive effort with three runs and two hits, including a double. Epple scored two runs and stole three bases, while Johnson drove in three runs and had two hits. Korson added power to the lineup with a home run and two RBIs. Johnson also had a pair of steals and Pawenski swiped a bag.
GAME 2
Davenport dominated Roosevelt in the second game, winning 22-0. The Panthers' offense exploded with a nine-run second inning, capitalizing on 14 walks issued by Roosevelt. The game began quietly, but Davenport ignited in the second inning with
Aidan Arbaugh's single and
Cam Johnson's bunt single, leading to a loaded bases situation. Clay's RBI walk opened the scoring, followed by Epple's two-RBI single, and several more runs from walks and wild pitches, giving Davenport a commanding 9-0 lead through two innings. Barboza and Clay drew a bases loaded walk in the inning.
Davenport continued to build their lead in the third inning with singles from Pawenski and Warn, followed by
Travis Liford's two-RBI double for an 11-0 advantage. The fourth inning saw two unearned runs added due to a dropped fly ball, extending the lead to 13-0. Warn made the miscue spotlighted with a two-run single to right.
The fifth inning was highlighted by a series of hits, with Johnson stealing second and scoring along with Clay and
Max Ferrick.
Vincent Hardy and
Alec Wojahn contributed with RBI singles, and
Garrett Swan capped the inning with a three-run homer, bringing the score to 21-0. It was the first home run of the season for Swan and he became the 11th different Panther to homer this season. A final run in the sixth made it 22-0, and the Panthers' pitching staff secured the shutout with a complete-game performance.
Colton Blankstrom was exceptional on the mound, pitching a complete game shutout over seven innings, allowing only five hits and one walk while striking out four batters. His efficient outing used 83 pitches, with 59 for strikes, improving his record to 2-1.
Clay again stood out, scoring three runs and driving in three more with three walks and a HBP. Epple collected two runs and two RBIs, while Warn added two hits and two RBIs, proving crucial in the offensive onslaught.
Cam Johnson collected two of DU's 13 hits and stole a base. Liford also had a steal and drove in three runs.
Up next for Davenport is a matchup against the Lakers at noon on Sunday to look for the four-game sweep.
