Davenport strikes first, but Drury rallies for a 3-1 win in the season opener

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Davenport (0-1-0) was defeated by Drury (1-0-0) with a final score of 3-1 on Thursday at the Lake Country Soccer Complex in the 2026 opener. Davenport's lone goal came in the first half, but it was unable to overcome Drury's three-goal performance.

Davenport took an early lead with a penalty kick goal by Charlie Davis in the 31st minute, capitalizing on one of its three corner kicks in the first period. Davis took and converted the first PK of his career. However, Drury responded swiftly less than three minutes later as Caua Nascimento, assisted by David Huang, equalized, and followed up with an own goal in the 36th minute to close the period ahead 2-1. Beau Hudd, the Davenport goalkeeper, managed two saves but could not prevent the Panthers' comeback.

Drury capitalized in the second period with a decisive goal by Samuel Tagg in the 76th minute, assisted by Eyal Kibrik, extending its lead to 3-1. Davenport struggled to convert opportunities, with Drew Matyunas and Henry Lopez both taking shots that failed to find the target. The period was marked by physical play, resulting in yellow cards for both teams, including three for Davenport. Despite increased offensive efforts, Davenport was unable to close the gap, concluding the match with a 3-1 deficit.

Hudd played the entire 90 minutes in goal, making four saves against 12 shots faced. Matyunas contributed with two shots, though neither was on target. Davenport finished with a total of seven shots, but the Davis goal proved to be the lone shot on target. DU was issued five yellow cards in the match by five different players.

Looking ahead, Davenport will travel to Rolla, Missouri, for their next game against Missouri S&T (1-0-0). The match is set for Saturday, Aug. 29, at noon.
