LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - The ACHA men's Division I hockey team gave up a late goal on Friday in their season opener to force overtime, but a power play goal by Sammy Mielock in the extra session gave Davenport a 4-3 win over N.C. State. The Panthers and Icepack were meeting for the first time at the ACHA Lake Placid Fall Faceoff to kickoff the 2026-27 season.

Jack Kelly scored back-to-back goals in the first six minutes of the second period to give the Panthers a 2-0 cushion. He scored 19 seconds into the frame with assists from Luke Mikkola and Dylan Jouppi. Kelly's second tally was assisted by Matt Carlson and Mikkola.

N.C. State was able to rally and tie the score at 2-2 heading into the third period. Jack Ammons got the first goal at 8:48 from Nick Shook and Gian Khani. Shook got the other goal unassisted at 18:41.

Sammy Mielock scored on the power play at 4:18 of the third period from Tony Kauffman and Ethan Wallace to regain a 3-2 lead for the Panthers. The Icepack kept putting pressure in their offensive zone and it paid off with 58 seconds to play in regulation as Ammons scored his second goal of the game unassisted. 

The Icepack took two penalties after the tying goal and briefly fought off nine seconds of 5-on-3 in regulation. The one penalty expired in overtime, but Mielock scored on the 5-on-4 at 1:49 from Bryan Fenlon to give DU the narrow victory. Kyler Lowden made 31 saves between the pipes for Davenport. 

The Panthers will skate tomorrow at 6:30 PM in the second game of the Fall Faceoff against Lehigh. It will be the inaugural game between the two programs.
