The Davenport Men's Soccer team entered today's WHAC Championship knowing that a win would advance the Panthers to the Regional Tournament and a loss would end their season. Aquinas had the same thing to play for and dominated the offensive side of the field as the #4 Saints defeated the #2 Panthers 3-0 to claim the post-season tournament.
Aquinas (14-5-1 overall) posted two upsets in the WHAC tournament and won both games away from their home field. It took just 10:11 for the visitors to get on the board as Eric Smith redirected a pass from Levi Swaney above the keepers head to give Aquinas an early 1-0 lead. The play would then become even until a Davenport Panther defender misplayed a ball at the 35:14 mark and let Jeovani Pantoja dribble all the way down the sideline before he crossed it to Erich Jackson who one-timed it past the keeper for a 2-0 lead.
Davenport University (11-6-1) would have their chances as Elfid Kovacevic almost pulled the Panthers within one as time ticked away in the 1st half as he headed a pass from Efrain Hernandez past the keeper, but another Saints defender was their to make a diving save. Aquinas would then go on to add a third goal at 45:54 to give the Saints a commanding lead. For the game, Aquinas posted eight shots which was the same number for the Panthers and Ben Richardson got the win posting four saves. Aquinas has now earned the #1 seed for the WHAC in the upcoming Region VIII Tournament. They will play the #2 seed from the MCC in Saturday's Regional Semifinal.
