Grand Rapids, Mich. - David Wood posted two goals for the second consecutive game but it was not enough as DU fell 3-2 to Aquinas College. The Saints recorded a goal with just over five minutes to play to steal the win and send DU to its 4th loss in six games.
After coming off an impressive 3-0 shutout of Indiana Tech on Saturday, the Panthers seemed poised to return to their early season form that vaulted them to #20 in the NAIA poll. Unfortunately, DU ran into one of the hottest teams in the WHAC as Aquinas recorded the 3-2 victory.
The Panthers opened the scoring just twenty minutes into the game when David Wood got a quick one-two pass from Tony Deakin and Rory Scott and put the ball by the Saints keeper. The lead was short-lived though as AQ came right back less than 1:30 later to tie the game on a goal from Jarrod Smith. Davenport looked as if they would have a lead as they outshot the Saints 11-7 in the opening half.
The remainder of the half was a defensive battle as DU could not get a quality shot by the keeper. Opening the second half it was all Aquinas as they became the more aggressive team and it turned into their first lead at the 55:55 mark when Erich Jackson scored a goal. With the pressure to score and tie the game building for Davenport, Scott took a ball on the sideline and passed it cross field to Wood again and the forward took advantage of the keeper being out of position to tie that game at 2-2 with just 20 minutes to play. As the time ran down, it looked as if the game would be headed for overtime but with 5:00 to play Aquinas lofted a ball that seemed to look like an offside call but the Saints forward timed it perfect and squeezed the ball past Jack Owens for the game-winner.
With the loss, Davenport falls to 5-4-0 on the year and just 1-3-0 in WHAC play. The team will look to rebound when they travel to Siena Heights on Saturday.
