Allendale, Mich. - The Panthers entered Wednesday's nights contest fresh off a tough loss to one of the top teams in all of NCAA D2 in Hillsdale, and it only got tougher tonight. DU traveled across town and took on #10 ranked GVSU and fell in straight sets 25-15, 25-8, 25-18.
The match was the second in a row against one of the top teams not inly in the GLIAC but in all of NCCA D2. The Panthers started off the first set with high energy and a sense of urgency and actually had the serve trailing by only three 15-18. A missed opportunity to put a ball away off of a free ball and GVSU started to get in their rythym which led to seven straight points to end the first set. The second chance to take a set from the Lakers got off to a bad start and snowballed from there as the host team dominated 25-8.
After a short break bewteen the final two sets, the Panthers regrouped and came out with much more energy and passion and stayed with the Lakers for most of the game. DU could not muster enough offense though and fell to GVSU 25-18 in the final set to end the match.
Megan Vanderhyde (Sparta, MI) led the offense with 6 kills and Kayla Vandermolen (Cedar Springs, MI) dished out 10 assists. Heather Deal (Ravenna, MI) led the defense with 13 digs.
The loss drops DU to 5-9 on the year as they will now have 8 days off before their next action at Taylor University. The Panthers will face off against the host team in the Taylor Tournament next Friday at 4:00 PM before facing Spring Arbor in the night-cap.
