Huntington, Ind. - Ashley DeRuiter's natural position is defense but when the task came to score in Tuesday's game vs. Huntington, the sophomore was ready for the challenge. Unfortunately, a career day by Ashley was not enough as DU fell 5-3.
The first half of the game could not have started any worse for the Panthers, who were playing their first game in almost 10 days. Huntington racked up four straight goals within the first 15 minutes of play to take a commanding lead. DU would then settle down and scored its first goal on a penalty kick from DeRuiter. Ashley would go on to add her second goal of the game to cut the lead in half off of a free kick and just moments into the second half scored her third goal on another PK.
Huntington quickly regrouped after seeing their 4-0 lead cut to just a single goal and came back with a late goal for the final outcome. DU had a chance to tie the game shortly after DeRuiters third goal but it was waived off due to offsides.
With the loss, DU falls to 0-2-1 on the year as they will play host to Concordia University on Saturday in their home opener at 12:00PM. The game is being played at the South Christian Athletic Park in Caledonia, MI.
