LIVONIA, Mich. - After not defeating Madonna once prior to this season, the Lady Panthers completed a rare season sweep today with a 2-1 victory. The win lifts DU to 6-6-1 on the year and 5-3-1 in the WHAC with three league games remaining.
Davenport, which had not scored a goal since a 3-0 victory over Aquinas back on September 30, got out of the gates in a hurry today when sophomore Britteny Willis (Hudsonville, Mich.) picked up her third goal of the year on an assist from Sarah Pitmon (Grandville, Mich.) at the 3:47 mark.
DU quickly followed that goal with a second just 5:03 later as Daniella Bugli (Shelby Twp, Mich.) scored on a beautiful kick just under the bar from 25 yards out.
Defense then became a huge factor as Madonna turned up the offensive pressure and the host Crusaders broke through with a goal at 60:41 by the DU keeper Catherine Howard (Lowell, Mich.).
Davenport however hung on with solid play down the stretch as Howard finished wih 11 saves on the day.
The win lifts DU to 6-6-1 on the year and 5-3-1 in WHAC play. The Panthers picked up three crucial points in the race for the top four spots that would qualify them for the WHAC Tournament for the first time in school history.
