GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport set a new school record for points in a game and margin of victory in a convincing 111-33 victory over Kuyper College in their season opener on Friday. DU will now play in the championship game on Saturday at 3:00 PM.

It took only 13 seconds for the DU Men's Basketball team to show they will be a much more intense team this year as each team received a technical foul and the excitement was a sign of things to come as DU dominated Kuyper 111-33 on Friday night.

Gabe VanderJagt (Rockford, Mich.) got the scoring going at the 18:26 mark as the Panthers scored the first nine points of the game while not allowing a point until 16:28.

After the jumpshot from Kuyper, DU then went on a 16-0 run over the next 5:28 to break open the game. Four different Panthers scored during the stretch as VanderJagt, James Nelson (New Haven, Mich.) each knocked down long range shots.

Defense continued to be a point of emphasis even with the large lead for Head Coach Burt Paddock, and Davenport did not allow the Cougars to reach double-digits until there was only 7:36 remaining. DU closed out the half leading 56-13.

Things were very similar for the two teams in the second half as the Panthers opened the closing twenty minutes on a 13-0 run after a field goal from Mario Scott (Grand Rapids, Mich.). After two free throws from Kuyper, DU then went on a 10-0 run to lead by 64.

Paddock was able to get all of his players into the game as no player played more than 25 minutes in the game.

Gabe VanderJagt posted 19 points in his first ever collegiate game and was joined off the bench by Nathan Cox (Flushing, Mich.) who finished with 13 points and a game high 12 rebounds.

Three other players posted double-digits for the Panthers as James Nelson finished 15, David Thompson (Grandville, Mich.) 14 and Lorenzo Ecford (Chicago, Ill.) 10.

The 111 points sets a new school record for points in a game and the margin of victory of 78 also is a school best.

DU will not play in the championship game on Saturday with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 inside the Student Center.
