GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport's Men's Soccer team will play in the WHAC Championship game for the 3rd time in the last five years after a 2-0 shutout of rival Aquinas on Saturday. The Panthers, the #4 seed in the WHAC Tourney, will play next Saturday at Indiana Tech who defeated Cornerstone in a shootout.
Two goals in the opening half were enough to carry DU into the WHAC Finals on November 14 as they defeated WHAC #1 Aquinas on their home field on Saturday afternoon.
DU got the scoring going early in the 5th minute when Alex Boehm (Stevensville, Mich.) took a loose ball just outside of the box and put it by the Saints' keeper to put Davenport up 1-0.
Just over 12 minutes later, DU struck again this time on a brilliant play from Duvare Minto (St. Mary, Jamaica) to give DU a two goal cushion.
Davenport would have quite a few more opportunities in the opening half as they hit the bar and got two close range shots blocked by defenders other than the AQ keeper.
The second half was much more of a defensive game for Davenport as they protected their lead but they kept on a steady dose of offensive pressure to keep Aquinas off-guard.
Neither team was able to find the net in the second half which gave DU keeper James Gilpin (Newcastle, UK) the shutout and a WHAC semi-final win for the Panthers.
Davenport will face #2 Indiana Tech who defeated #3 Cornerstone on penalty kicks in a shootout
The win lifts DU to 8-10-0 on the year.
