March 15, 2009

John Carroll Box Score  Oakland Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University Women's Lacrosse team concluded its first annual DU Play Day this afternoon with a win over Oakland University after defeating John Carroll earlier in the day.

The first game of the day began evenly as both teams made some offensive production. The game remained close until Valerie Carr and Kendra Stieg put in two goals each to set the score at 6-2. John Carroll would add one goal with two minutes remaining sending the Panthers into the locker room up three.

Second half action extended the DU lead to five as Lydia Bedford and Jamie VandeWinkle each added a goal within the first ten minutes of play. All was not lost in the eyes of the visiting team as John Carroll fought back to get within four goals with 6:42 to play in the game, but Shaye Bradley held strong in net only allowing one shot past in the remaining clock to give the Panthers a 10-7 win.

The final game of the weekend and the day came as DU faced Oakland in the 12:30 game. Early action was slow on each side as this game would prove to be defensive struggle until the end. Going into halftime, Oakland held a 3-2 lead as the Panther offensive push could not put any pressure on the Grizzly goal.

The final half of the weekend began quickly as DU pushed two goals into the net off the sticks of Kendra Stieg and Daniella Bugli to take their first lead of the game at 4-3. Oakland would come back four minutes later and even the score as both teams continued to fight hard to gain the upper hand. Davenport would regain the lead as Bugli added her second of the game. The Panthers would rely on their tough defense for the remaining ten minutes as Shaye Bradley would hang on and lead DU off the field with a victory and a second day sweep.

The win lifted Davenport to a 3-1 overall record for the weekend and set the season's overall record at 5-6. The Panthers will look to return to .500 as they welcome Albion College Thursday night at 6pm and then will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to compete in the Xavier University Play Day.
