GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The women's soccer team continues to climb the ladder in the WHAC and made a giant step today by defeating Cornerstone on their home field 3-0. The win lifts DU to .500 on the year at 3-3 and the Panthers are now 2-1 in league play.
After defeating Madonna earlier this season for the first time ever, the Lady Panthers made headlines today with an impressive 3-0 victory over cross-town rival Cornerstone.
DU opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Britteny Willis (Hudsonville, Mich.) took a pass from Ashley Phillips (Stevensville, Mich.) and put away her second goal of the season. DU then buckled down on defense for the remainder of the half and went into the break leading 1-0.
After posting three shots on net in the opening half, the Panthers offense continued to pepper the CU keeper in the second half totaling seven more shots and put distance between them and the Golden Eagles in the 50th minute on a goal from Ashley Phillips.
Ashley would later put away her second goal of the game at the 58:43 mark to give the junior five points on the day.
Freshman goalkeeper Catherine Howard (Lowell, Mich.) earned her third win in net and recorded her first shutout as a Panther. Howard faced only four shots on goal and saved them all to preserve the shutout.
DU is now 3-3-0 on the year and 2-1-0 in league action. Davenport will host Concordia University on Saturday at 12:00 at the Turf Field.
