GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport defeated Aquinas 3-0 today to notch their fifth win of the year which sets a new school record for wins in a season. Ashley Phillips posted two goals and the defense pitched a shutout against the high scoring Saints as DU defeated Aquinas for the first time ever.

Having never beaten Aquinas in school history, the Panthers entered today's showdown coming off a tough 3-0 loss to Siena Heights on Saturday. The Saints also entered on a hot streak having defeated their last three opponents by the score of 15-3.

The defense, led by Leah Vanlaan (Caledonia, Mich.) and Kelcey Thompson (Martinsville, Ind.) helped shut down the NAIA offensive Player of the Week from last week and the offense got two big goals from Ashley Phillips (Stevensville, Mich) to post their school record fifth win.

Phillips got the scoring going at the 12:12 mark of the opening half when she took a pass from Britteny Willis (Hudsonville, Mich.) to put DU up 1-0. Defense and goalkeeper Catherine Howard (Lowell, Mich.) then stepped up and helped the Panthers take a 1-0 lead into the break.

Just eight minutes into the second half, Davenport increased their lead to two goals on a solid shot from Ashley DeRuiter (Kentwood, Mich.) from 25 yards out.

Phillips would add her second of the game and fifth of the season with just under five minutes to play as the defense continued to play solid and got the shutout.

Davenport improves to 5-4-0 on the year and 4-2-0 in WHAC play. They will travel to Livonia on Friday for a critical matchup against the Crusaders whom they defeated 2-1 earlier this season.
