GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport claimed a share of its first ever WHAC regular season championship today with a 1-0 win over rival Cornerstone. The win, which is the first ever for DU on the road against Cornerstone, lifts the Panthers to 12-5-0 overall and 5-0-0 in league action.
On what turned out to be a brutal day in terms of conditions, the Panthers fought off many odds as they picked up their fifth straight victory with a shutout of the Golden Eagles.
Early in the first half while going directly into the 30 mph winds, Davenport struck on a goal from
Jesse Asanin-Miroux (Thornhill, Ontario). The sophomore took a perfect pass from
David Wood (Middlesborough, UK) from the right sideline and put it by the CU keepers to put the Panthers on top 1-0.
Neither team posed much of a threat for the remainder of the opening half and DU took a significant advantage into the locker room as they would have the wind behind them for the next 45 minutes.
Again, DU picked up the pace early but a few key saves and misplayed balls deep in the CU defensive zone allowed the game to remain at 1-0 in favor of the Panthers.
Jai Maw (Macclesfield, England),
Alex Boehm (Stevensville, Mich) and
Stuart Collins (Cork, Ireland) all had good scoring opportunities but the shots went just wide or the CU keeper came up with a big save.
The defense then held strong and DU keeper
Kevin O'Brien (Cork, Ireland) made his lone save of the day after a breakdown defensively. The ball was deflected by O'Brien after a one on one chance for CU and the Davenport defense cleared the ball and the remainder of the clock for the 1-0 win.
The win is the first ever for Davenport at Cornerstone and gives the Panthers at minimum a share of the WHAC regular season crown heading into their matchup Saturday with Aquinas College. Game time is set for 3:00pm and will follow the women's game slated for 12:30pm.
