Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Davenport Women's Soccer team clinched the third seed in the WHAC Tournament with a 2-1 win over Aquinas. The win brings Davenport's record to 8-3-4. Before the game the Panthers honored their senior players in their last regular season home game.

Senior Daniella Bugli (Shelby Twp, Mich.) got the scoring started for Davenport as she knocked in a goal near the end of the first half to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead going into halftime. A strong wind prevented either team from controlling the game too much.

Going into the wind for the second half, Alyssa Malone (Hudsonville, Mich.) beat the Aquinas goalkeeper after two good passes from Thelma Gylfadottir and Ashley Phillips for her first goal of the season giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

With the wind behind Aquinas, most of the second half was spent with Davenport on the defensive. Good defense along with Jessica Bergsma's (Jenison, Mich.) solid play in net helped the Panthers maintain their 2-0 lead.

A foul in the box gave Aquinas's Madeline Rammal a one on one penalty kick, which she converted to cut the Panthers lead in half, 2-1.

Aquinas nearly tied the game when a long header went just wide of the post past the outstretched arms of Jessica Bergsma (Jenison, Mich.).

The win by Davenport clinched the third seed in the WHAC Tournament and guaranteed them a home game next Saturday. The opponent and time of the first round matchup is to be determined. Continue to check www.dupanthers.com for more information regarding next week's game.
