GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport is making the most of a second consecutive trip to the WHAC Tournament as they withstood a late rally to defeat Indiana Tech 3-2 in the Quarterfinals. This was the Panthers first WHAC Tournament win. Davenport will play at Siena Heights on Wednesday in the Semifinals.
Emily Nielsen (Marshall, MIch.) got the scoring started for Davenport when she headed in a corner kick from Ashley DeRuiter (Kentwood, Mich.). A few minutes later Ashley Phillips (Stevensville, Mich.) scored on a shot that was lofted just over the Indiana Tech goal keeper's hands.
Indiana Tech would score just before the half to cut the Panthers lead to 2-1.
Davenport got some cushion when MaryBeth McMillan (Middlebury, Ind.) slipped past the Indiana Tech Defense and converted a one on one goal twenty minutes into the second half.
Defense was key for the Panthers in the second half. They held the Warriors scoreless in the half until a goal with 2:30 left in the game brought Indiana Tech within one.
Jessica Bergsma (Jenison, Mich.) allowed two goals on ten shots and made some key saves in the final minutes to preserve the win for Davenport.
The win brings Davenport to 11-3-3 all-time on the DU Turf field. The Panthers will next be in action when they travel to Siena Heights on Wednesday, November 10 for a 2:00 pm Semifinal match-up. Siena Heights advanced by beating Concordia 3-0 at home. Davenport lost 1-0 in overtime to Siena Heights in the teams' regular season meeting in early October.
