ATLANTA, Ga. - Shawn Beer scored five goals to lead Davenport to a 16-8 win over Savannah Art of College and Design (SCAD) today in Atlanta. The win lifts DU to 3-0 on the year as they will take on last year's Elite 8 opponent Emory on Sunday.
DU got things started quickly with two straight goals from Shawn Beer (Aurora, Ontario) and Jordy Sayers (Davison, Mich.) to go up 2-0. SCAD came right back with two quick goals of their own but Beer added a late one to lift the Panthers to a 3-2 lead after one quarter.
The two teams then accounting for nine second quarter goals with Davenport taking a 8-6 lead into halftime. Scoring for DU in the quarter was Cody Cross (Grand Rapids, Mich.) with two, Gavin Morris (Rockford, Mich.), Sam Carlson (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Sayers.
The defense then stepped up for the #3 ranked Panthers as they outscored SCAD 6-1 in the third quarter behind the stellar play of Zach Higgins (Courtice, Ontario) in net. The Panthers got two goals from Lyle Parks (Troy, Mich.) as Carlson, Cross and Beer also got into the scoring.
DU ended the game with only one goal in the final 15 minutes but the defense was again solid holding SCAD to just one goal themselves. The Panthers outscored their opponents 8-2 in the second half.
DU improves to 3-0 on the year as they will face Emory on Sunday. Emory is the team that Davenport knocked out of last year's MCLA D2 Elite 8 in Denver, CO.
