Fast Start Leads to 10-7 Win over Grace College

BOX SCORE

KENTWOOD, Mich. - Davenport's bats finally came to life today after a tough weekend as they downed visiting Grace College (Ind.) 10-7 in non-conference action. The Panthers scored all ten of their runs in the first five innings to improve to 13-18 on the year.

The Lancers scored the first run of the game after an error by DU but the Panthers came right back with four runs on six hits in the bottom of the first. Rob Bolster (Blissfield, Mich.) and Travis Laver (Holland, Mich.) each reached base on singles with Bolster collecting a steal and a run on an error by GC and then Matt Collins (Akron, Ohio) brought home Laver on a single to center.

Austin Licon (Rockford, Ill.) and Dan Brown (Bay City, Mich.) each followed with singles that gave DU a 3-0 lead and the scoring finished with a run from Licon on a single from Derrick Gentile (Sturgis, Mich.).

Davenport would proceed to put up runs in their next four at-bats with one each in the 2nd and 3rd innings and two each in the 4th and 5th.

Austin Licon connected on his 6th homerun of the year in the 3rd while Dan Brown hit his fourth homerun in the first at bat of the 4th. Matt Collins finished off the scoring with a 2-run shot in the bottom of the fifth.

#Greg Bartlett# (Hemlock, Mich.) was solid in his second start of the year as the junior went 6.0 innings giving up just three hits, three runs (1 earned) and striking out five.

The game did get a little interesting down the stretch as Gordon Powers (St. Clair Shores) allowed four runs in the top of the eighth but Cody VanKoevering (Jenison, Mich.) came in to collect his first save of his college career by striking out two of the three batters he faced.

Matt Collins led the way for DU going 2/4 with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored while Dan Brown finished 2/3 with 2 RBI and a run scored. Travis Laver had a season high three hits and three runs scored.

DU is now 13-18 on the year and will take on Indiana Tech this weekend with two games on Saturday in Fort Wayne and two on Sunday at home. Both doubleheaders are scheduled for a 1:00 PM start.
