Long Ball Propels DU to Sweep Over Calvin College

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport University defeated the Knights from Calvin College today 4-0 and 9-0 in 5 innings. The Panthers are now 33-11 overall and 10-4 in conference play.
In game one Davenport started the scoring in the third inning when Nikki Aldrich (Robinson, Ill.) scored off an error by the Calvin shortstop. DU would then add three insurance runs in the sixth inning to seal the 4-0 victory.
Ashlee Olsen (Rockford, Mich.) was 3-4 on the day while Karlee Despres (Belmont, Mich.), Kristina Krum (Kalamazoo, Mich.), Ali Dawson (Galesburg, Mich.) and Aldrich each had hits in the game.
Despres earned her seven win on the mound going all seven innings and giving up just four hits.
In game two the Panther bats would start to warm up with homeruns from Dawson and Kelsey Egyhazi (Mishawaka, Ind.) in the third inning after standing nine runners on base in the first two innings. DU would then add three more runs in the fourth off of four straight hits, and head into the fifth inning up 5-0.
Freshman Chelsey Dow (Lake Odessa, Mich.) would lead off the fifth with a solo homerun to right field followed up by hits from Sandi Seaman (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) and Jessica Fagan (Spokane, Wash.). With runners on first and second Haley Stehouwer (Wyoming, Mich.) would seal the 9-0 run rule victory with a walk-off homerun to center field.
Sam Cole (Belleville, Mich.) and Brianna Carpenter (Irvine, Calif.) would combine to throw a two hitter with Cole earning the victory on the mound.
With the two victories today Davenport is now 33-11 on the year and will be back in conference action on Wednesday when they host Aquinas College at 4:00pm. Games will be played at the Christian Reformed Recreation Center.
