ELGIN, Ill. - Davenport handed their head coach
Patrick Grashorn his first collegiate win on Friday afternoon as they downed the host Eagles of Judson 9-0. DU will stay in Illinois to face Olivet Nazarene on Saturday morning in Bourbbanais.
After seeing their first match of the year postponed because of rain last weekend, the Panthers hit the road for Elgin, IL today and came away with a convincing 9-0 win over the host Eagles.
In the singles matches, DU captain
Jeff Karasinski (Grand Rapids, Mich.) got things started with a three set win over his opponent in the #1 slot. The Panthers then got straight set wins from returners
Vitaly Schumilov (Togliatti, Russia) 6-1, 6-1 and
Matt Weiden (Kentwood, Mich.) 7-6, 7-6 as well as newcomers
Victor Roland (Natal, Brazil) 6-4, 6-1,
Eric Pell (Caledonia, Mich.) 6-3, 7-5 and
Tyler Chambers (Rockford, Mich.) 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, the Panthers were just as dominate as they won the three matches by a combined 24-6 margin led by Schumilov and Weiden as #2 doubles with an 8-0 win.
Chris Grashorn (Rockford, Mich.) made his first appearance of the night as he teamed with Chambers to win their #3 doubles match 8-2. Karasinski and Roland won the #1 doubles match 8-4.
Davenport improves to 1-0 on the year and will take on Olivet Nazarene on Saturday.
