GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After a disappointing 2-1 loss on Wednesday to Kalamazoo College the women's soccer team rebounded with a 2-0 home victory over the Pilots from Bethel College. Davenport now sits at 5-1-1 on the year and 3-0 at home this year.
In the first half Davenport outshot the Pilots eight to three with
Emily Nielsen (Marshall, MIch.) scoring the lone goal of the period at the 3:37 mark. The goal would be unassisted and Nielson's second of the year.
Due to lightning the beginning of the second half would be delayed for over an hour but that would not affect Davenport's ability to continue to control the game. DU would almost double their shots from the first half with fifteen and add another goal in the last five minutes of the game. Nielson would feed
Lizzie Paul (England) with a great cross field pass to give Paul, the NAIA National Player of the Week, her thirteenth goal of the year.
Davenport would end the day with 23 overall shots and goalie
Jessica Bergsma would contribute four saves to earn her fourth shut-out of the year.
The Panthers are now 5-1-1 overall and will continue non-conference play next Saturday when they travel to Illinois Tech for a 2:00pm game.
Coach Allen's Post Game Comments:
“The first ten minutes was really tough against a strong Bethel team. We then settled down and passed the ball well and played to our overall game plan. Emily Nielson scored a great goal in the first period and then had a fantastic pass onto a great run by
Lizzie Paul who scored the second goal for us. I was very pleased with how the girls played today and responded from a tough loss earlier this week.”
