INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -
Ashley DeRuiter scored a goal in each half today as the Lady Panthers rebounded from a tough draw on Saturday to down Cardinal Stritch 2-1. DU will take a 2-0-1 record to Ohio next week to take on Malone University on Wednesday.
After leading for almost the entire game on Saturday afternoon, DU was unable to close the door on St. Francis (Ill.) as they wound up with a 1-1 draw. The team got off to another great start on Sunday vs. Cardinal Stritch (1-3-0) as senior
Ashley DeRuiter scored in the 21st minute to put the Lady Panthers up 1-0.
Unfortunately, the celebration did not last long as the Wolves came right back and scored only 20 seconds later to knot the game at 1-1. The two teams then battled for the remainder of the first half but were unable to create many scoring chances ending the first 45 minutes deadlocked at one.
The offensive pressure then picked up significantly for DU as they were able to control the pace of play and put numerous shots on net and DeRuiter broke through again in the 80th minute with her second goal of the game. Freshman
Emily Nielsen was credited with the assist on a ball that just sailed over the keeper's head.
Jessica Bergsma then made some big defensive plays down the stretch to preserve the win and help send the Panthers to their second victory of the year.
Davenport (2-0-1) will travel to Canton, OH on Wednesday to take on Malone University before playing host to Holy Cross on Saturday.
