Allen Post Game Interview
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After taking a 2-0 lead in the first half, Davenport was unable to hold off Cornerstone as the Golden Eagles tied the game late. Neither team was able to score in overtime to give Davenport their first tie of the season. The Panthers needed a win tonight and a win over Aquinas on Saturday to gain a share of the regular season title. Davenport will still be playing for seed on Saturday, as a win and a Siena Heights loss puts the Panthers in second.
The game started off a little slow with both teams struggling to get anything going offensively. That all changed at the 36:39 mark in the first when
Natalie McHale scored the first goal of the game for Davenport.
Thelma Gylfadottir was credited with the assist when she gathered the rebound off a Davenport cornerkick and found McHale in front who was able to put it away.
The Cornerstone defense started to relax just before halftime and Davenport took advantage. With 25 second left in the half,
Paige Eli scored her seventh goal of the season to give Davenport a 2-0 advantage heading into the half.
The momentum seemed to change in the middle of the second half. With 18 minutes remaining in the game, Cornerstone's Maile Carigon found the back of the net after an assists by Anna Stegink to cut the Panthers lead in half at 2-1.
With 1:36 remaining in the game and Davenport still leading 2-1, Kate Wiegman headed in a cornerkick for Cornerstone to tie the game.
Davenport put the pressure on Cornerstone in both overtimes but weren't able to get anything past the Cornerstone goalkeeper. One of Davenport's best chances came in the second overtime when
Paige Eli shot the ball from well outside the box and hit the crossbar.
Despite leading Cornerstone in shots 24-14, Davenport wasn't able to get a lot on goal forcing the Cornerstone goalie to make seven saves in the game.
Catherine Howard made five saves for the Panthers.
Davenport will conclude their regular season on Saturday at Aquinas. The game is scheduled to start at 12:00.
