Davenport Rebounds from First Loss with 75-50 Win at Concordia

Panthers now 13-1 on the year and 4-0 in league play

Box Score

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - After suffering their first loss of the season on Friday night, the No. 3 ranked Davenport men's basketball team came out on a mission on Saturday night as they returned to WHAC play in convincing fashion with a 75-50 win over Concordia in Ann Arbor. James Humphrey set a single game school record with 6 blocks as well as the win lifts Davenport to 13-1 on the season and 4-0 in league action.

JaVontae Ford led all scorers on the night with 20 points as he finished 7-17 from the field. Also scoring in double-figures were James Nelson and Damacious White with 18 and 16 points respectively.  DU limited the Cardinals to just 15 first half points while holding them to 34% from the floor in the game.

The opening 8:00 of play told most of the story for the night as Davenport raced out to a 15-0 lead until the host Cardinals finally got on the board with 12:01 to play.  The lead would continue to grow as the first half went on with the Panthers holding a 37-15 lead at the break.  JaVontae Ford led all scorers in the opening 20 minutes with 10.

Davenport then started the second half exactly like the first and after a thundering three-point play on an alley-oop dunk from James Nelson, the Panthers held a 48-15 lead.  The lead grew to as many as 30 (53-23) on a deep three pointer from Damacious White with 13:57 remaining.  DU struggled to keep their intensity down the stretch as Concordia got to within 16 but that would be the closest for the remainder of the game.

Other statistical leaders for Davenport were Lonnie Fairfax with 6 assists, James Humphrey with seven rebounds (tied with Fairfax) and a group of four players including Jon Prins finished with a pair of steals.

Post-Game Quotes - Assistant Coach Craig Heatherly and James Humphrey

Heatherly on rebounding from tough loss Friday: “It really was a team effort tonight and playing that tough stretch really meant we had to get down to playing better half court defense…Today's win is more about winning championships as we needed this win to keep that goal alive.”

Humphrey on defensive intensity at start of each half: “We had some anger in us after last night's loss to be honest…We wanted to come out and play hard and win big..Every WHAC win is huge for us”

Post-Game Notes

Davenport is now 6-10 all-time against the Cardinals with all six of those wins coming in the last three years…DU has not lost in Ann Arbor since January 5 of 2008 which is a streak of four wins by an average of 21 points...The 6 blocks by Humphrey sets a school record for a single game besting the previous record of 4 set by three different players
