Box Score
Amherst, N.Y. – Davenport lost for the second time this season on Saturday falling 63-66 at #RV Daemen College. The Panthers led for most of the game but weren't able to put away the Wildcats allowing them to pull off the upset. Davenport will have a few days to regroup before they take on St. Francis (Ill.) on Tuesday in Joliet.
JaVontae Ford made a couple three's early to give Davenport a 12-2 lead five minutes into the game. But over the next four minutes Davenport made only one field goal on a steal and layup by James Humphrey to let Daemen climb back into the game. The Wildcats took their first lead, 15-14, with just over ten minutes left in the half.
The rest of the first half went back and forth as neither team was able to get a lead of more than a few points until Davenport closed the half on a 7-0 run to take a 34-26 lead into the half. Ford was 3-4 from behind the arc as he and Humphrey led the Panthers with 15 points each in the first half.
Daemen's defense came out tough in the second half and prevented the Panthers from getting into any sort of rhythm. After Davenport extended their lead to a game high 11 points on a Ford three point play just over four minutes into the second half, Daemen went on a 10-0 run to cut the Panthers lead to one.
Davenport trailed for the first time in the second half at the 9:27 mark when a Daemen jumper broke a 49-49 tie. In the final ten and a half minutes there were seven lead changes and four ties.
Down two, Davenport put together a 6-0 run to give the Panthers a four point lead but once again Daemen battle back with their own 5-0 run to retake the lead.
Trailing by four with 28 seconds remaining, JaVontae Ford knocked down a three to cut the deficit to one. After Daemen made both free throws to push the lead back out to three, Davenport had life but wasn't be able to convert either three attempt in the last few seconds.
Ford led the team in points (23), rebounds (9), and blocks (2). James Humphrey added 20 points and eight rebounds while James Nelson finished in double-digits with 10 points.
Davenport will have to regroup quickly as they travel to Joliet, Ill. on Tuesday to take on St. Francis (Ill.) in the Panthers final game before the Holiday break. This will also be the Panthers last non-conference game of the season. Davenport's overall record drops to 13-2 on the season.
