COLUMBUS, Ga. - After dropping their opening round match to the top overall seed, the Davenport men's bowling team made a valiant effort but fell just short of the final four as they finished in a tie for 5th at the 2011 USBC National Team Championships. Davenport fell 4-2 to Fresno State to end their run after their most successful season in school history.
Qualifying 16th in the 16 team tournament made the bracket play that much more difficult for the young Panthers squad and they were quickly thrown into the loser's bracket after the first match in which they fell 4-1 to top seeded Lindenwood University.
All matches played in bracket play would be a best out of seven game Baker Match and Davenport had to quickly regroup in their second round match against No. 9 seed Rochester Tech. DU dropped the opening game 202-201 but recovered by winning four of the next five to advance.
In the third round, the Panthers took on the University of Toledo and continued to bowl strong as they took down the Rockets in convincing fashion by the score of 4.5-0.5. Four of the five games, Davenport went over the 200 mark highlighted by a 233 in the clincher.
With a chance to get into the loser's bracket final. Davenport went up against perennial power Purdue University and despite a slow start, went on to win 4-2 to advance to take on Fresno State for the right to go to the Final 4 on Saturday morning.
DU dropped the first game but recovered to win the next two holding a 2-1 advantage but the Bulldogs stormed back to win the next three games and ultimately the match 4-2. That abruptly ended the run for Davenport in their first ever appearance at the National Tournament.
Witchita State will take on Fresno State in one semifinal while Robert Morris and Webber International are in the other. All semifinal matches and championship will take place on Saturday.
