GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport women's soccer team continues to roll through the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference schedule.
Letesha Cannonier and
Thelma Gylfadottir scored a goal in the first half and
Tam Grzybowski provided an insurance goal in the second half as the Lady Panthers beat their crosstown rival Aquinas 3-1 for the second time this season Wednesday evening.
Both teams showed a strong effort of possessing the ball, even though the Lady Panthers outshot the Saints 16-6, 8-2 on goal. Cannonier,
Paige Eli and
Lizzie Paul both led the effort for Davenport with three shots each, Grzybowski had two and
Laken Duchar-Clark and
Karitas Elvarsdottir had one.
Even though she allowed one goal,
Michelle Marcus had somewhat of a quiet evening, needing to only make one save.
Both teams started traded off possessions very early in the first half but the Panthers found the back of the net first in the 12
th minute. Saint goalkeeper Molly O'Conner sent a goal kick across midfield but
Ashley Roth sent it back to the Saints defenders, Cannonier stole the ball and took two touches before her shot to the left side beat O'Conner to put the Panthers ahead 1-0.
Gylfadottir's eventual match-winning goal in the 24
th minute came off a beautiful setup by Cannonier and Paul. From about 35 yards, Paul's sent the ball to the left side of the goal where Cannonier's one-touch cross found a jumping Gylfadottir to give the Lady Panthers a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Saints got back into the match at 60:21. A free kick from about 30 yards hit the crossbar where Saint Kelly Petzold was there to knock the loose ball into the goal.
But the Lady Panthers got the two-goal lead back in the 71
st minute when Grzybowski's free kick just outside the right corner of the penalty area bounced into the left side of the goal.
With the win, Davenport remains in a tie for first place in the WHAC standings with Indiana Tech, which dominated host Marygrove 8-2 Wednesday night. The Panthers and Warriors will meet Saturday at 7 p.m. in a battle for sole possession of the top spot in the WHAC.
Post-Match Quotes – Assistant Coach Kristin Eible:
On getting the two goals in the first half: “Those two goals were big in the first half. We knew it was going to be a good match coming back after we played them in a non-conference counter. We give them a lot of credit. They came out strong and our team kept playing to find ways to get those goals.”
On Letesha Cannonier: “She's been playing very well. I think she continues to get better as the year goes on. She finishes her chances and finds ways to get in, which is good.”
