Box Score

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Lizzie Paul found her scoring groove back late Wednesday afternoon as her pair of goals helped lift the Davenport women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Concordia and move closer to achieving its first ever Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference regular-season championship.

The Lady Panthers need to win one of the two matches remaining in their regular-season schedule to clinch at least a share of the title, and they can win it outright by winning both. They will travel to Madonna Saturday at noon and finish the regular-season at home against Beltline rival Cornerstone on Oct. 24.

Davenport dominated nearly all of the offensive categories, outshooting Concordia 23-6 overall and 12-5 on goal. Paul paced the match with 11 shots; five on goal, and Tam Grzybowski followed with five shots overall, four on goal. The Cardinals although edged the Lady Panthers 6-5 in corner kicks.

Michelle Marcus made five saves in 88 minutes of work to help Davenport earn its program-record 10th shutout of the season. Within the final minutes of the match, head coach Chris Allen called Marcus to the bench and sent standout Catherine Howard back onto the field for the first time this season after an injury sidelined her this season.

Paul's first goal was scored in the 27th minute with an assist from Alyssa Malone and Grzybowski helped Paul score the insurance goal in the 88th minute.

Post-Match Quotes – Head Coach Chris Allen

“It was a tough match for us, traveling to Ann Arbor where Concordia has some good players. They really worked hard today. We fluffed our lines a little bit in the first 20 minutes but found a little bit of rhythm after Lizzie's first goal. We definitely wanted to apply more pressure during the match but we really worked on moving the ball around and played some very nice soccer in the second half to dominate the possession stats. The ball wouldn't go in for us though and sometimes you just have to be patient and okay with scoring two goals and not conceding a goal on the road. There were some good performances from a few players who came into the team and we were happy with that. Meesh (Michelle Marcus) made another great save today too, which really helped is out. We are really looking forward to playing Madonna Saturday, who is the joint No. 2 team in the conference. It's going to be another very tough match and we will be giving our best to finish the regular-season off ahead of the tournament."
