LIVONIA, Mich. – The 2012 Davenport women's soccer team have accomplished so much throughout the regular season, setting new records in wins, shutouts, goals, assists and consecutive streaks. While the Lady Panthers added on to all but one record (the shutout record) in Saturday's 2-1 victory at Madonna, they added a new section to their history book: a Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference regular-season championship.

With a 7-0 record in WHAC play for a total of 21 points, the Lady Panthers clinched at least a share of the regular-season crown. They can win it outright and enter the conference tournament as the No. 1 seed with a win or draw at home against Beltline rival Cornerstone Wednesday at 4 p.m.

The Lady Panthers dominated nearly all the offensive categories, outshooting the Crusaders 15-6 overall, 7-3 on goal. The Crusaders were the only team to take corner kicks, recording four.

Both teams combined for five shots early in the first half. It wasn't until the 29th minute the first goal was scored. Letesha Cannonier dribbled to the left corner before crossing to Alyssa Malone, who made few touches before her shot found the back of the net.

The Crusaders would tie the match in the 65th minute on a penalty kick but would regain the lead in the 65th. From midfield, Paige Eli fed a cross to a breaking away Cannonier on the left side. Although Crusader keeper Blaire Schmalenberg prevented Cannonier from advancing, the ball loosely rolled into the goal to give the Panthers the lead.

In their match against Cornerstone on Wednesday, the Panthers will say farewell to their graduating seniors.

Post-Match Quotes –

Head Coach Chris Allen:

On the match – “Madonna is a very good team. (Head coach) Jeff (Hodgson) is a great coach and has got some very good players. I think if they were a bit healthier, they would have caused us a lot more problems. We weren't at our best but we battled it out and we scored two goals. We kept it tight for the most part but it was one of those games where we had to go do the job, work hard and get a win that takes us to 7-0.”

On this year's squad – “They are a great group of young ladies. We've had so much this year. We've worked very hard. Every single player on the roster has done an amazing job. They've each had a different role and it's been really special working with them, work hard with them. But we are not finished yet. We've only achieved part of goal. One of our biggest goals this season is the No. 1 seed in the (WHAC) tournament and winning it. We're definitely enjoying this today and feel good about it, but we have a long way to go and a lot harder work to do. We are really looking forward to it.”

Sophomore midfielder Natalie McHale:

On winning the WHAC championship – “I think it is a really special time to do it this year, especially because we have all the seniors who put so much hard into the program. With it being my second year, it's good to raise the bar from last year when we didn't even make it to the (WHAC) finals. I think it's really good.”

On what it will take to beat Cornerstone – “We have to remain focus and stick to the same goal. It's going to be a tough battle but I think with our game plan how we have been playing we should do well and keep our win streak.”
