Bats Come Alive on Day Two of Union University Tournament

JACKSON, Tenn. – After dropping their last three games the Lady Panthers responded today in a big way collecting two victories over Midway College (18-0) and No. 21 Columbia College (10-9) at the Union University tournament. Davenport posted a school record 18 runs against Midway and had a total of 29 hits in both games to improve to 12-4 on the year.

Against Midway the Panthers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the second behind a Katie Cornman homerun. DU then posted eleven in the third, four in the fourth and one more in the fifth to defeat Midway 18-0 in five innings.

Cornman ended the game with three hits including another homerun to give her two in the game. Tami Weber was 3-4 as well and fellow freshman Paige Sant'Angelo finished with five RBI's in her four plate appearances.

DU finished with 15 hits in game and Ashleigh Blovsky was a perfect 2-2 with a homerun and a walk. On the mound for DU, Arlie DeYoung went five complete innings giving up just three hits with three strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the year.

The bats continued to stay hot when DU faced off against No. 21 Columbia College recording 14 more hits in route to an exciting 10-9 victory. After seeing themselves fall behind 1-0 after two complete innings, Amber Getty stepped up and hit a two run home run to put the Panthers up 2-1 after three complete.

In the fourth inning DU pushed four runs across behind hits from Getty, Blovsky, Weber, Debra Burton and Morgan Greenfield. Up 6-1 in the top of the sixth inning Columbia put together a rally of their own scoring seven runs on seven hits to take a 8-6 lead into the bottom of the inning.

Davenport responded right back in the bottom of the six filling the bases loaded with one out. Senior Katie Cornman then stepped up and hit a bases clearing double to left center to put the Panthers back on top 9-8. Ali Dawson followed up Cornman's hit with an RBI single to complete DU's four run inning.

The Panthers held off the strong Columbia offense in the seventh to pick up their twelfth victory of the season with a final score of 10-9. Sam Cole went all seven for DU picking up her eight win of the season.

On her bases clearing double in the sixth inning: “It was very exciting. After falling down by two runs I had no doubt in my mind that we would come back and pull off the victory. I stepped up to the plate calm and collective and just wanted to do my part to help our team win.

On the biggest difference between yesterday and today's performance as a team: “Yesterday we struggled mentally and today we regrouped, had fun and just played Davenport softball.”

This was the first meeting for DU against Midway College and Columbia College…The 18 runs scored in game one ties a school record set back in 2009…DU had 29 hits on the day which is the most in a day this season…Katie Cornman was 5-8 with two homeruns, six RBI's and a double on the day
