Panthers Drop Back to Back 5-4 Decisions to Hope and Elmhurst

Hope Box | Elmhurst Box

HOLLAND, Mich. - Davenport got back to the hard court on Saturday with a pair of matches against NCAA DIII foes Hope and Elmhurst but unfortunately they came up one victory short as they fell to each 5-4.  The Panthers are now 6-8 on the season and will host Saint Francis (Ill.) on Saturday at Canepa in East Grand Rapids.

Davenport returned to action on Saturday in their first match since spring break and unfortunately came out on the losing end to both Hope and Elmhurst in identical 5-4 results.

Hope

Davenport fell behind early 3-0 in the doubles portion making it very difficult to come back from and post a win as DU dropped two 8-4 matches and one 8-6 in three very contested battles.  Having to win five of the six singles matches to take the overall win, DU was unable to do so and fell 5-4.

Picking up wins on the single side for DU were Victor Roland at No. 2 (6-3, 1-6, 6-3), Christian Woods at No. 3 (6-4, 6-2), Eric Pell at No. 5 (6-4, 6-4) and Tyler Chamberd at No. 6 (6-3, 6-3).

Elmhurst

For as close as the Hope match was, Davenport played an even closer one with Elmhurst (Ill.).  DU was able to start with a point in the doubles section as Eric Pell and Tyler Chambers posted an 8-5 win at No. 3.  The freshman duo of Christian Woods and Mattheus Carvalho played the tightest match of the day at No. 2 but fell 9-8.

On the singles side, DU again played tough against the BlueJays but came up just short in falling 5-4 again. Roland won a three set thriller at No. 2 while Woods won in straight sets at No. 3 (7-5, 7-5).  The other point came in another three-set match with Keaton Briggs winning at No. 6 (5-7, 7-5, 10-6).

DU will return to action on Saturday at Canepa Tennis Center in East Grand Rapids against St. Francis (Ill.). The match is set for an 11:00am start.
