EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Looking for one of the biggest wins in program history, the Davenport men's tennis team was unable to pull out some close sets as they fell 7-2 to No. 13 Aquinas College. The loss ends the Panthers 5-match winning streak as they now stand at 11-9 on the year.
Davenport was riding its longest winning streak in school history but unfortunately ran into one of the top-15 teams in the country as Aquinas posted a 7-2 win to improve the Saints record to 17-1.
Aquinas held a 3-0 advantage after the doubles play with the Panthers taking four games at No. 1 behind
Vitaly Shumilov and
Victor Roland and three games at the other two.
The singles matches were very closely contested as half of them went three sets and two others were very tight. Davenport picked up their first win at No. 5 when
Tyler Chambers pulled out a 10-8 third set tiebreaker. The Panthers also got a dramatic three set win from No. 6 singles player
Keaton Briggs. The junior lost the first set 6-1 only to bounce back with his own 6-1 win in the second. Briggs then posted an 11-9 win in the tie-breaker.
Victor Roland and
Eric Pell each lost close sets with Roland falling in three sets at No. 2 singles. The senior dropped the first set 7-5, won the second 7-6 (4) and then fell 11-9 in the tie-breaker.
