HOLBROOK, N.Y. - The Davenport defense did their job holding SCAD to just seven goals but the Panther offense struggled on the day scoring only five goals. The five goals is the lowest output for Davenport since last spring when they scord five at Grand Valley State during the regular season. With the loss, Davenport falls to 8-4 on the season.
Both teams got off to slow starts offensively. Cody Cross got the Panthers on the board first with a goal off a pass from Dominic Boggiano just under 10 minutes into the first quarter. But it was SCAD who would hold the lead after the first when the Bees scored two goals in the final 3:07 of the opening quarter to take a 2-1 lead.
The back-and-forth game continued in the second. The Panthers retook the lead with two goals in the first two minutes. The Panther goals came from Boggiano and Cross. But the Bees came right back with a pair of goals to give the Panthers a 3-4 deficit at the half.
SCAD scored their third consecutive goal two-thirds the way through the third quarter to take a two goal lead. Dominic Boggiano scored his second goal of the day near the end of the third to cut the lead to one and Cody Cross scored his third goal early in the fourth to tie the game at five.
With the game tied, SCAD retook the lead with 5:32 remaining in the fourth. The Panthers had a couple opportunies to score late but weren't able to convert. A late penalty put the Panthers a man down and led to a SCAD goal with one second left.
Zachary Higgins was in net for the Panthers making 11 saves and allowing seven goas as his record fell to 4-2 on the season. Cody Cross and Dominic Boggiano scored the only goals for the Panthers as they had three and two respectively.
Davenport will be in action again next Saturday when they take on #2 Grand Valley State in Lowell, Mich. at 7:30 PM. This game marks the beginning of three straight conference games to close out the regular season for the Panthers.
Post-Game Quotes - Head Coach Bob Clarkson
Thoughts on Game - "We came out flat and had trouble getting anything going offensively. On the plus side our defense played well and we controlled the X on faceoff's. We need to work the kinks out before we finish with GVSU, Hope, and Indiana Tech."
