GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport University women's soccer team kicked off its 2012 season in attack mode all evening. Despite maintaining possession a majority of the match, all of the Panthers goals came in the second half as they downed the University of Rio Grande 5-0 in non-conference action Tuesday evening at DU Turf Field.
Thelma Gylfadottir knocked in the first goal of the year at 57:05 and added another one at 84:33. Her second goal was one of four scored in the final eight minutes as
Kasey Eberlein knocked in the insurance goal at 82:35,
Mackenzie VanDerWarf scored the fourth goal at 85:48 and
Alyssa Malone, who assisted Gylfadottir's first goal and VanDerWarf's, closed out the match with the fifth goal at 89:28.
Karitas Elvarsdottir also had a productive evening as she assisted Eberlein's and Malone's goals.
Davenport (1-0) opened the first half immediately on the attack, recording 13 shots with two on goal. Davenport finished the evening holding a 30-6 shot advantage over the Red Storm (0-1). It was also a quiet outing for the Panther goalkeepers as
Lexi Kruse and
Michelle Marcus each played a half and did not have to make a save.
Davenport will take Wednesday off before hitting to road to meet Indiana University Calumet for the first time in program history Thursday at 8 p.m.
Post-Match Notes: Davenport has won three consecutive season-openers and has now improved its all-time record to 3-3-1…the Panthers are also 3-4-0 in their home openers.
