HAMMOND, Ind. – The Davenport University women's soccer team has a new career goals leader as junior
Lizzie Paul recorded career goal Nos. 22 and 23 to pass Ashley Phillips (2007-10) and help the Panthers beat Purdue University Calumet 6-0 Thursday evening.
Already two matches into the 2012 season, Paul has become the fastest student-athlete to reach the career milestone. Phillips was a senior when she set the record of 22 goals.
The Panthers also found a unique momentum in which they scored two goals in less than 30 second not once, not twice, but three times to win the inaugural meeting against the Peregrines.
Alyssa Malone also highlighted the night by scoring a pair of goals, scoring both of her goals in the span of 26 seconds. With the two goals scored, the Lady Panthers (2-0) also saw
Paige Eli and Kasey Eberlain find the back of the net to contribute to the six-goal barrage. While Davenport's offense recorded 21 shots, 13 in the first half, the defense also continued to hold its opponents scoreless in the young season. Of the nine shots taken by the Peregrines (0-3),
Michelle Marcus stopped three of those while
Lexi Kruse made one save.
Both teams carried possession in both ends of the field and had scoring opportunities, but at the 24:24 mark,
Letesha Cannonier sent a thru ball to
Paige Eli inside the penalty area where she knocked in the match's first goal. Eleven seconds later,
Lizzie Paul had a breakaway from midfield and eventually beat Peregrine keeper Keeley Mazurkiewicz to put Davenport ahead 2-0.
The Peregrines started the second half strong but the Panthers got their momentum back when Eli's cross from the right side found Malone to score the first of her two goals at 57:48. Twenty-six second later,
Letesha Cannonier's shot from outside the penalty area hit the crossbar but Malone controlled the rebound and put the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the match.
Paul scored her second goal of the match at 76:13 off a cross from
Mackenzie VanDerWarf and 22 seconds later she was credited an assist when her cross from the right side found Kasey Eberlain, who scored the sixth goal on the evening.
The Lady Panthers will take some time off to prepare for classes, which begins next week, but they will welcome NCAA Division II Northwood University to DU Turf Field Sept. 9.
Post-Match Notes: The Panthers and Peregrines have never met before Thursday's match…with two goals scored in Thursday night's match,
Alyssa Malone has set both a match and season-high. In four years in a DU uniform, Malone has never scored more than one goal in a season…the Lady Panthers have yet to allow a ball in the back of their own in the last 180 minutes.
Head coach
Chris Allen's thoughts about the match: “Tonight's match was actually tougher than the one we played on Tuesday. We had a similar result but we added one more goal tonight but I thought defensively we were better again. We still got a long way to go but we are gaining confidence offensively, we're getting things figured out all through our defenders and we've got a week to prepare for Northwood, which is going to be an even tougher test. But it seems like our schedule has worked really well for us. To be honest, I'm really surprised with how many goals we managed to put away, but when we within the matches, we could even score more. But to score 11 goals in two matches and not to give up one I'm absolutely delighted with it.”
Junior Forward
Lizzie Paul on becoming Davenport's career goals leader: “It feels amazing. I didn't expect to accomplish this in my junior year, especially when the last person who set the record was a senior. I have to thank my team as well. I couldn't have done it by myself.”
