ITA Midwest Regional Comes to Close for Davenport

Alyssa Fuentes and Chambers' brothers make semifinals in respective flights

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The United States Tennis Association/ Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional finished up late on Saturday night and Davenport University saw one female singles player and one male doubles team make the semifinals in their respective divisions.  Now the attention turns towards dual matches this Friday at Gainey Athletic Complex.

The annual USTA/ITA Midwest regional was hosted by Aquinas College this past weekend and Davenport saw much success from their entire rosters.  Highlighting the women's singles draw was freshman Alyssa Fuentes who advanced to the semifinals while the duo of the men's side was the brother combination of Tyler Chambers and Zac Chambers who also reached the semifinals.

"Now that the ITA is over, our focus will be back on the upcoming dual matches, said head coach Patrick Grashorn. We will spend a lot of time this week working on small mechanical changes and continue to reinforce the important of shot selection in singles and positioning in doubles."

Both teams are off to strong starts in dual matches as the women are 1-0 with a dominating win over Cornerstone last week while the men are 1-1 as they have split with Cornerstone and Aquinas. A big part of their team play has been from some newcomers and Grashorn is excited to have some great young talent in the program.

"Alyssa (Fuentes) is definitely talented and she is beginning to move better and besides having some minor injuries, she is playing solid tennis. Filip (Henrikson) has all the tools to become a force in our conference this season, added Grashorn. His swing speed is as fast as anyone else out there and if he can translate that into better depth, he will be tough to beat."

The team will now look ahead to this Friday's dual matches as the women play host to Aquinas College and the men will take on NCAA DII foe Lake Superior State. Both matches are scheduled for an 11:00am start at Gainey Athletic Complex.

"The message heading into our matches this week will be to finish out their matches, said Grashorn. On more than one occasion this past weekend, we got off to a great start only to run out of gas and lose the match in the end.  I anticipate close matches this weekend on both sides.  For the guys it will be a chance to prove we can hang with the NCAA DII opponent and for the girls, a statement match for our official conference match in the spring."
