Panthers Look To Keep Momentum Going Against Northwood Sunday

Weekly Notes | Live Stats | Live Video/Audio

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – With the first week of classes in the book, the Davenport University women's soccer team returns to the field for its lone match of the weekend, hosting Northwood University Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Lady Panthers are coming off back-to-back shutout victories last week to kick off the season, opening the home schedule with a 5-0 win over the University of Rio Grande and two days later they rolled past women's soccer newbie Purdue University Calumet 6-0.

Senior Alyssa Malone had an outstanding performance last week that it earned her the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference's first Offensive Player of the Week accolade of the season. The midfielder scored one goal and tallied a pair of assists against the Red Storm, and at the Peregrines, Malone recorded her first multiple-goal season by scoring two in the span of 36 seconds. The Panthers also had a unique rhythm during the match, as they would score two goals in less than 30 seconds on three different occasions.

Let's not forget the solid defensive performance. The Panthers defensive line limited their two opponents to a total of 15 shots while recording 51 of their own. In addition being the only team in the WHAC to have not allowed a goal thus far into the young season, sophomore goalkeepers Lexi Kruse and Michelle Marcus have only had to make a combined four saves between the posts.

Northwood University is coming off a tough 4-1 loss at Saginaw Valley Friday and is entering the match Sunday still in search for its first victory. Like the Lady Panthers, the Timberwolves are two matches into the season but have only scored three goals. Although Alyssa Tomassi has scored one of the three goals, she keeps knocking on the door as she paces the Timberwolves with nine shots, three on goal.
